Mindset drives behaviours, so, how to change my mindset?
“Aoccdrnig to rsceearh at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer waht oredr the ltteers of a wrod are in so lnog as the frist and lsat ltteers are in the rghit plceas. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed wuothit a porbelm.”*
You read that and understood it, didn’t you? A slight hesitation maybe after the first couple of words, but then you understood what had happened and pressed on, it becoming easier and easier as you progressed.
This is all about context and filtering. The context is that you believe you are reading English text and the filter is you have seen these groups of letters before so your brain automatically re-arranges them to make sense. The filter is powerful and reinforces any of your existing beliefs and experiences.
So what?
If we want to change our behaviour we need to change our mindset. Lets look at leadership.
Traditional leadership behaviours of command and control, highly directive and not listening could well be driven by a traditional mindset of position, status, experience, respect & control. Pretty high chance that the outcome will be compliance at best.
But what if we want to gain commitment? That will require compassionate leadership behaviours like listening, caring, coaching, supporting and enabling, driven by a compassionate leadership mindset of awareness, empathy, being non-judgemental and focusing on growth
We can use the iceberg analogy where it is the mindset hidden deep under water that supports the behaviours for all to see.
We cannot leap from iceberg to iceberg, we need to dive deep and change the mindset first.
At the Compassionate Leadership Academy we know that, and so focus on creating the right mindset first before we start developing the leaders’ skillset.
This way we help drive the right behaviours and gain commitment
So let us mkae srue we wrok on our medsnit frsit
Come and join us at the Compassionate Leadership Academy.
